Join Us!

The Guilford Greys were reactivated in the year 2000. We portray a mid-war and late-war image of a Confederate infantry company in the 27th North Carolina Regiment, Cooke's Brigade, Heth's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee commanding.

Our Federal impression is the 14th U.S. Regular Infantry Regiment, Second (Sykes) Division, Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac.

The Guilford Greys have been a member of the 4th Regiment (1st N.C. Battalion) of the 1st Division, Army of Northern Virginia since 2002.

Why a Federal impression, too?

For those who wish to portray both sides in the reenacting hobby, the Guilford Greys have reactivated the 14th U. S. Infantry Regiment. Through this effort, members can portray a Federal impression as well as Confederate. In the hobby, this dual portrayal is known as "Galvanizing". The ability to galvanize helps to ensure an accurate and correct presentation during battle reenactments and living histories of the struggles of the War Between the States.

What does it take to join?

While reenacting does require a rather large investment ($900 to $1200 depending on what and how much you purchase), the "hobby" does not require that everything be purchased at once. Normally, other members of the regiment will have additional gear to fill in what you need. Below are the addresses of some recommended sutlers for your uniform, accouterments and weapon.

At the January 19, 2002, Annual Meeting the Guilford Greys implemented a nominal dues schedule. The bulk of the dues goes to pay for each member’s Liability and Accident insurance that covers the member at the events in which we participate.

Annual Dues Schedule (revised 01/12/2008):

  • Dues are $6.00 per Family per year, plus the following dues per military or civilian individual to cover insurance and battalion fees.

  • Primary member, Individual or Head of Household (Military or Civilian Impression) $11.00

  • Family member living in the same house with the primary member:

    • Military Impression $11.00

    • Civilian Impression $3.00

Getting Started

It normally takes new recruits a while to get outfitted as a member of the Greys. Most new members purchase their equipment over a period of months and use loaner equipment as needed. A list of recommended sutlers is below.

REMEMBER, all uniform styles, colors and material, as well as your accouterments and your musket need to pass approval by the Company commander. If you are not sure what to purchase, consult with the individual who sponsored you or with another current member before making a purchase.

It is recommended that you purchase your uniform and equipment in the following order.

Uniform -

Kepi (wool, Confederate gray with no color band) or slouch hat

7-9 button shell jacket: Confederate gray, no color trim. Jacket buttons should be one of the following: NC Sunburst, NC State Seal, or Confederate "I" button.

Pants: Wool, Federal Sky Blue

Suspenders

Shirt: Muslin, cotton, flannel, or calico period design

Socks: Wool, Gray, Black or Brown

Shoes: Jefferson Brogans

Eyeglasses: If you need glasses you MUST wear period glass eyeglasses and these should be one of the first things purchased. No plastic frames or modern style metal frames are allowed. Period frames can be purchased from sutlers and your optometrist can fit them with your prescription.

Accouterments -

Leathers
Cap Box
Cartridge Box with Shoulder Strap (tins optional)
2" wide leather waist-belt, black with oval CS or NC buckle
Scabbard and frog for bayonet

Haversack

Canteen of any period design

Musket -
3-band reproduction Enfield or Springfield recommended, with sling and bayonet.

Tent

It is recommended that you purchase either a 6' or 7' tall wedge ("A" frame) tent or a shelter (dog) tent, depending on how much room you want. Do NOT purchase a wall tent.

FEDERAL ITEMS

For your Federal impression you will need to add a Federal sack coat and Federal belt and buckle to the list. These should probably be your last items to buy. If you wear a slouch hat it can be used for both impressions, otherwise look for a Federal kepi or forage cap. If you purchase wisely, other items can double as Confederate and Union.
