The Original Guilford Greys
The
"Guilford Greys" was formally organized as a militia company in Greensboro,
Guilford County, North Carolina, on the 15th of March, 1860. It was on this date
that the officers received their commissions from North Carolina Governor John W. Ellis.
The
timing purposely coincided with the anniversary of the Battle of Guilford
Courthouse, "an honored day among the people of old Guilford."
The
company
was mustered into Confederate service on June 20, 1861, and was eventually assigned to the 27th
North Carolina Regiment and designated as Company B.
Some of the individuals listed below have a small headstone like the one to the
left preceding their name. The headstone is a link to a photograph of the
individual's headstone or memorial stone. Photographs of the stones of other members of the
original Guilford Greys will be added as they become available.
